Salisbury City
Salisbury City in North Carolina shouldn't be confused with other
places bearing the same name, especially in a much popular Cathedral
City in Wiltshire, England. Salisbury in North Carolina is the county
seat of Rowan County and is popularly known as a Tree City USA which
emphasizes its care to the environment. Salisbury is also famous being
the hometown for the famous soft drink Cheerwine by the Carolina
Beverage Corporation as well as one of the largest American grocery
store, Food Lion.
Salisbury has notable schools of higher learning, aside from its basic
education private schools, elementary schools, middle schools and high
schools: Catawba College and Livingstone College and Rowan-Cabarrus
Community College. Catawba College is a liberal arts college established
in 1851 and has been a consistent placer among the Best Colleges in the
United States according to Princeton Review. The college is much
well-known for its Theater program, which has always been in the
country's top ten. Livingstone College is a historically black college
which was established in 1879. It offers degrees in Bachelor of Arts,
Fine Arts, Science and Social Work degrees.

The city has a total area of 17.8 square miles, with a population of
26,400 people (according to 2000 Census). The city has a large historic
home district, adorned with many large mansions.
One of the notable
places is the Fulton Heights Neighborhood Historic District, a suburb
town which has been developed in years dated as early as 1906. The
beautifully-designed houses are interestingly patterned in grid
formation.
it is also one of the originators of the streetcar system. In
1998, the district was included in the National Register of historic
Places.

Another landmark included in the Historic register is the Salisbury
National Cemetery. Some of the notable monuments in the cemetery are
that of a 25-foot granite monument topped by a statue of a soldier which
was erected in 1908, the 50 foot tall granite obelisk known as the
Federal Monument to the Unknown Dead which was constructed in 1876, and
the 40-foot granite Pennsylvanian Monument, built in 1909. The cemetery
was established as the burial site for the prisoners of war. The
cemetery became a National Cemetery after the American Civil War. It was
included in the Registry in 1999.
Other important landmarks in Salisbury are Bernhardt House, Maxwell
Chamber House, Community Building, Archibald Henderson Law Office, Mount
Zion Baptist Church, John Steele House, Monroe Street School, Salisbury
Southern Railroad Passenger Depot Shaver Rental Houses District, Monroe
Street School and a lot more.
