North Carolina Hospitals
Composed of four independent yet unifying health institutions, the
University of North Carolina Hospitals has been continuously providing
quality health care to Carolinians and visiting patients since its
creation in September 1952 in Chapel Hill. What was formerly known as
the North Carolina Memorial Hospital has grown through time and has led
to the inception of North Carolina Children's Hospital, North Carolina
Memorial Hospital, North Carolina Neurosciences Hospital and North
Carolina Women's Hospital. Another division, the North Carolina Cancer
Hospital is currently under construction.
The North Carolina Children's Hospital caters to children who have been
stricken with disease or injury. Housed on its newly-constructed
building in 2002, the hospital is a leading institution in the cure and
research for respiratory disorders like cystic fibrosis, cancer, heart
disease, sickle cell disease, hemophilia, severe burns and trauma on
children. The hospital has an excellent team of physicians and nurses
that is capable of dealing with any children diseases and disorder. They
also specialize in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, birth
defects and infectious diseases. In addition, UNC is one of only two
hospitals in the southeast to perform living donor related liver
transplants in children.

What started it all is the North Carolina Memorial Hospital. Before
the children's and women's hospitals had been moved to their respective
locations, they were all housed in a single structure.
The hospital
still remains as one of the leading academic medical centers in the
state and has been a provider of high quality patient care and community
service and a good contributor of advance research and education to
health care professionals.
The NC Neurosciences Hospital opened in 1995 to provide facilities
and research to accommodate the fast evolving world of neurosciences.
These include brain-mapping techniques, gene therapy and psychiatric
care.

Among the institutions' services include psychiatry services,
research laboratory services and expanded inpatient and outpatient
clinics for neurology, neurosurgery and otolaryngology. The building is
also distinct for its design, enveloping a warm and welcoming feeling to
patients and other visitors.
The NC Women's Hospital provides care to women and is committed in
giving them their needed emotional and spiritual support. Among its
services include Women’s Wellness Program (midlife care and nurse
midwifery, breast evaluation, obstetrical and gynecologic care,
gynecologic surgery, perimenopausal and menopausal therapies etc.) ,
Women's Health Information Center, ambulatory services, pastoral care
and breastfeeding.
Aside from this main divisions, the University of North Carolina
Hospitals also includes the following departments: McLendon laboratories
(provides anatomic pathology and laboratory medicine services for all
